A watch movement out of its case is small, light and easy to nudge out of true if you try to hold it in your fingers while you work. A proper movement holder keeps the movement steady, keeps your fingers away from the balance and train, and lets you use both hands for hand fitting, stem work or oiling. Choosing the right holder for the calibre you are working on makes the difference between a calm job and a frustrating one.
Adjustable plastic holders
An adjustable plastic holder, sometimes sold as a two piece or three piece set, uses a rotating ring of fingers that close gently around the edge of the movement. This is the most forgiving option for a beginner bench, because one holder in each size range covers a wide spread of calibres rather than needing an exact match. Plastic will not mark a movement edge if you tighten it a little too far, which makes it a sensible first purchase alongside a replacement movement.
Fixed metal holders
A fixed metal holder is machined for a specific movement diameter or a named calibre family, such as a holder cut for NH35, NH36 and the common ETA 2824, 2892 and 8200 sizes. Because the seat is machined rather than adjusted by hand, a well fitted metal holder grips more evenly around the case and resists twisting when you are pressing in a stem or setting hands under load. Calibre specific and movement ring holders

A movement ring, which sits inside a case as a spacer, is a different job again and should not be confused with a bench holder, since a ring supports a movement inside its case rather than holding it during service on the bench.
Matching a holder to common beginner calibres
If you are working with Seiko NH34A, NH35A or NH36 movements, a plastic adjustable holder is a practical starting point, and a fitted metal holder is a worthwhile upgrade once you are doing repeat work on the same family. Manual wind movements such as the Seagull ST36 and automatic calibres such as the Miyota 8215 also sit comfortably in a mid size adjustable holder, since both use a broadly similar case diameter to the popular Seiko NH range. Always check the stated diameter range on the holder against the movement diameter before you buy, rather than assuming one size fits everything.

The most common mistake is over tightening an adjustable holder until the fingers bite into the case edge, which can distort thin cases or make the movement difficult to release cleanly. The second is using a holder that is too large for the movement, which lets the movement rock slightly and makes hand setting or stem fitting less precise.
