An ultrasonic cleaner can be useful on a watch bench, but it is also easy to use badly. The biggest beginner mistake is treating it like a safe bath for an entire watch. A complete watch, an assembled movement or a dial and hands should not be dropped into an ultrasonic tank and hoped for the best.

What ultrasonic cleaning does
An ultrasonic cleaner uses high frequency vibration through liquid to loosen dirt, oil and residue from small parts. That action can reach into shapes that are hard to scrub by hand. It is why ultrasonic cleaning appears in many jewellery, glasses and parts cleaning discussions.
For watch repair, the useful part is controlled cleaning of suitable loose parts. The risky part is water, solution and vibration reaching places where they do not belong. Watches contain lubricants, shellac, painted surfaces, luminous material, plated finishes and delicate assemblies. Not all of those tolerate ultrasonic cleaning.
Do not put a complete watch in the tank
A complete watch should stay out of an ultrasonic cleaner. Even if the case looks sealed, you should not rely on old gaskets to keep cleaning liquid away from the dial and movement. Water resistance is a tested condition, not an assumption.
An assembled mechanical movement should also stay out. Ultrasonic action can move loosened dirt around the movement, disturb lubricant, spread contamination and introduce moisture. If a movement needs cleaning, it normally needs proper disassembly, inspection, cleaning, drying, lubrication and regulation.
Parts that may be suitable
Loose metal case parts, bracelets, some case backs, bezels and selected movement parts may be candidates once they are removed and assessed. Even then, check for plating, paint, inserts, stones, adhesive and fragile finishes before cleaning.

Parts that should usually stay out
Keep dials, hands, luminous parts, complete movements, balance assemblies, assembled automatic modules and anything with uncertain adhesive away from ultrasonic cleaning unless you know the part and process. Vintage parts deserve extra caution because paint, plating and lume can be fragile.
Also be careful with crystals, bezels and inserts. Some parts may survive the tank, but the risk is not worth it if you have not identified the materials and construction. When in doubt, use a slower hand-cleaning method.
Pre-clean before you use liquid
Ultrasonic cleaning is not a substitute for inspection. Remove loose debris first. Use pegwood, blower work and clean handling to avoid dragging grit across a surface. For sticky bench contamination, products such as Bergeon Rodico, watchmaker cleaning putty and pegwood sticks can solve many small cleaning tasks without putting parts in a tank.
A precision air blower is also useful for dust control, provided you are not blasting loose parts off the bench. Good cleaning starts with control, not force.
Drying matters as much as cleaning
Any part that comes out of liquid must dry properly before it goes near a watch again. Water trapped under a bezel, inside a case tube, around a screw thread or in a jewel setting can create corrosion later. Do not rush reassembly because a part looks dry on the outside.

Use ultrasonic cleaning only for parts you have removed, identified and decided are safe for liquid and vibration. Keep complete watches, assembled movements, dials and hands out. If you cannot explain how the part will be dried and inspected afterwards, it is too early to put it in the tank.
