Rodico or Pegwood for Watch Repair

Bergeon Rodico Premium cleaning clay package with product.

Rodico and pegwood often sit beside each other on a watch bench, but they do different jobs. Rodico is a soft cleaning compound used for careful lifting and dabbing. Pegwood is a shaped wooden stick used for controlled scraping, pointing and cleaning in places where a hard metal tool would be too risky.

If you are setting up a beginner bench, it is worth having both. Treat them as complementary consumables, not substitutes. The better choice depends on whether you need to lift loose contamination, clean a shaped surface, or work close to delicate dial and movement parts.

When Rodico is the better choice

Rodico is useful when you want a gentle dabbing action rather than pressure. Watchmakers use it for tasks such as picking up loose dust, lifting small traces of grime, handling tiny screws at the bench, and tidying around parts where scraping would be too aggressive.

For a home repairer, Bergeon 7033-1 Premium Rodico is the kind of consumable that earns its place quickly. It is especially helpful when paired with a clean bench mat, a dust blower and proper finger protection because contamination control is usually a system, not one product.

When pegwood is the better choice

Pegwood is better when you need a shaped point or a small flat edge. You can trim the end with a sharp blade, shape it for the job, and use it to clean around recesses, pivots, jewels and case details with more control than a cloth or finger could provide.

The important difference is that pegwood works through light mechanical contact. That makes it useful, but it also means pressure matters. On delicate areas, use patience rather than force. The Pegwood Sticks 20 Pack gives you enough sticks to keep reshaping clean tips instead of trying to make one dirty end do every job.

Where beginners get them mixed up

The most common mistake is using Rodico as if it were a scrubber. Pressing and dragging compound across dirty surfaces can spread contamination or leave residue where you do not want it. Use Rodico with small lifts and dabs, then move to a fresh piece when it starts looking dirty.

The opposite mistake is using pegwood where a softer touch would be safer. A wooden point can still mark soft finishes if you lean on it. Around dials, hands and visible surfaces, pause before touching anything directly. If the part is cosmetic and exposed, a blower, clean handling and a no-contact approach may be the safer first step.

A simple bench rule

Use Rodico when the job is to lift. Use pegwood when the job is to shape a clean point and work a surface with light control. If the job involves visible dial furniture, painted surfaces, hand finish, or a part you cannot easily replace, slow down and reduce contact before reaching for either.

This is why a tidy bench setup matters as much as the consumables themselves. A clean mat, trays, finger cots and a dust blower reduce the amount of cleaning you need to do after the case is open. The WRT bench and consumables range is a good place to build that small kit, and the guide to setting up a clean watch repair bench at home covers the surrounding habits.

What to buy first

If you are only doing bracelet adjustments and battery changes, pegwood may not be urgent. Once you start opening cases, handling movements, fitting hands or cleaning around small movement details, both consumables become useful.

For most beginners, the practical answer is simple. Add Rodico for lifting dust and small debris. Add pegwood for shaped cleaning and controlled contact. Keep both clean, use a fresh working surface often, and avoid turning either one into a cure for poor dust control.
