Which Bergeon Spring Bar Tool Tip Should You Use

Bergeon spring bar tool for choosing the right fork and pointed tip

Spring bar tools look simple until the fork is too thick for the lug gap or the pointed end slips off a drilled lug. The right tip makes the job cleaner, and the wrong tip can mark the case before the strap even moves.

This guide explains the common Bergeon tip choices in practical bench terms, so you can pick a tool for straps, bracelets and replacement tips without treating every spring bar job the same.

Use a fine fork when the lug gap is tight

A fine fork is useful when the strap sits close to the case or the spring bar shoulder is small. It lets you reach the shoulder with less force, which is helpful on leather straps, rubber straps and cases where you are trying not to polish a new scratch into the lug.

WRT stocks fine fork tools such as the Bergeon 6767-SF Fine Fork Spring Bar Tool and the Bergeon 7767-SF Fine Fork Spring Bar Tool.

Use a stronger fork when access is open

A wider or flatter fork can be better when there is enough room to work and the spring bar shoulder is easy to see. It gives more bearing surface than a very fine fork, so it can feel more controlled on some bracelet end links and strap changes.

If the tip is replaceable, inspect it before use. A burred or bent fork can slip even when the tool is technically the correct style.

Use the pointed end for drilled lugs

On drilled lugs, the pointed end pushes the spring bar inward through the outside lug hole. That is different from levering against the shoulder from inside the lug. Keep the point straight, support the watch head and avoid forcing it if the spring bar is corroded or bent.

Replacement tips such as the Bergeon 6111D Reversible Pointed and Forked Replacement Tip and Bergeon 6111E Flat Forked Replacement Tip are useful if you maintain compatible handles.

Protect the case before testing the tool

Tape the lugs when the finish matters, work under enough magnification to see the spring bar shoulder, and stop if the bar feels frozen. For a stuck bar, read what to do when a spring bar is stuck before adding more force.
